Seascape 15-039
Seascape 15-039
2015
oil on board
4.25 x 6.25 inches
This is from a series of Seascapes I painted in early 2015. I spent several months in the studio on a set of 105 of them. This began with cutting, sanding, and preparing each board with multiple coats of gesso. Once the boards were ready I began refining limited colour palette from which to work.
The composition of each piece remains the same and a limited palette of colours is employed allowing the paintings to maintain a unified yet unique quality. The strong emphasis on the horizon line serves as both an entry point into the works and also as an emblem for the inward reflection that comes from looking out into an expanse.
I first started making these in 2009 following a month-long camping trip to the islands of Hawaii. I spent countless hours staring out into the horizon on the beaches there and when I returned to the studio it was all I could think of.
Each painting is not so much depiction of nautical scene as it is a meditation on an experience.
The works are unframed but I can help you work out framing options if you like.
