​This body of paintings takes inspiration from my mother’s garden in the rural region of qathet, British Columbia, Canada; along with influences from the constructed landscapes of urban parks near my Houston, Texas studio.
Gardens are traditionally places associated with growth and care and have been represented throughout art history as spaces where the magical and divine dwell—something which is definitely true in this case.
While my paintings take their inspiration from the landscapes which are impactful on my life, I find myself leaning more into abstraction in my depiction of them. I believe the language of abstraction—like the language of music—is universal. There is a feeling that resonates through it.
It is the essence of a place which I wish to capture in these works, not its literal depiction. An essence of the emotion and spirit of a place and its lasting affect.
